Name released of trooper killed on I-81 in Schuylkill
A Pennsylvania State Police trooper assigned to Troop L, Frackville, was struck and killed by a commercial vehicle on Interstate 81 this morning.
Police said Trooper Michael Pahira, was conducting a commercial vehicle safety inspection at about 7 a.m. near mile marker 119 southbound in Cass Township, Schuylkill County, when the trooper was struck by a passing commercial vehicle.
After striking the Pahira, the vehicle that struck the officer struck the commercial motor vehicle that was being inspected and subsequently caught fire.
Police said the driver of the vehicle that struck the trooper was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Interstate 81 South remains closed as the investigation continues.
Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered all Commonwealth and United States flags on commonwealth facilities, public buildings, and grounds across Pennsylvania to fly at half-staff immediately to honor Pahira. Flags shall remain lowered to half-staff until the date of interment, which has not yet been announced.
Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge President Joseph Regan issued the following statement regarding the passing of Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Pahira.
