Pools offer respite from the heat
The sweltering heat has led to a surge at public pools with even hotter weather on its way.
With temperatures expected to hover at around 100 degrees the next several days, the uprising figures to continue.
The Palmerton Memorial Pool was full of visitors early Tuesday afternoon as temperatures reached the 90-degree mark.
Cory and Krista Lopata of Palmerton brought their son, Emmett Lopata, 2, to the facility.
Members of the pool for the past several years, Krista said they thoroughly enjoy everything about the vicinity.
“We love it; it’s a beautiful pool,” Krista Lopata said. “There’s a lot of wonderful people that come, and a lot of wonderful events.”
Her husband, Cory, echoed that sentiment.
“They’re very friendly,” Cory Lopata said. “We like that they have the smaller pool for the little guy.”
Kaysee Bartholomew, co-assistant office and refreshment stand manager, said the pool has seen a definite uptick in visitors, and expects large crowds in the days to come.
“We see a lot more families coming in,” Bartholomew said. “It definitely gets chaotic.”
The pool will celebrate American’s 250th Birthday on July 11, when there will be a daily admission discount to all who served in the military. Proof of service is required.
Likewise, attendance has been excellent thus far this week at Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton, according to recreation director Tom Evans.
“This week, so far (there’s been) great attendance,” said Evans, who estimated that by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday they had around 300 guests. “That’s what we want for swimming pools.”
Evans said there will be extra staffing on the next few days due to the heat.
“It’s to give lifeguards more of a break; supply them with water all the time, and we have umbrellas with shade for lifeguards,” he said. “Even ourselves, we go around and check on the elderly because they’re out in the heat.”
Evans noted they’re planning on a busy next four days, and anticipates crowds will pick up even more Friday because of the holiday.
“Plus, the water is refreshing,” he said. “We have a great concession stand with food and drinks for a reasonable price.”
Evans said that while June was a “so-so month” due to the cooler temperatures, this stretch of heat makes for perfect pool conditions.
“It’s going to help our business more and more,” he said. “Hopefully it continues for the rest of the summer.”
Katherine Barhight Herzog, president of the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association, said the Slatington recreation destination has always seen a swell in visitors this week.
“We’ve definitely seen an uptick in people,” she said. “We’re looking forward to a nice, busy week, and hope this summer continues with a warm (pattern) so people come out and enjoy our pool.”
She noted that the pool is holding swim lessons this week as well, Monday through Thursday evenings, adding, “We’re pleasantly surprised how many people signed up for swim lessons.”
They also have aqua aerobics between 10 and 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays as well, and have had a “huge turnout.”
She said they are looking forward to welcoming families, as they made upgrades over the summer in the form of new umbrellas to provide shade for their guests.
The snack stand is “stocked and ready to go with lots of ice cream, beverages, food.”
They will host night swim from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday. The event is free for pool pass members, and $5 for nonmembers.
