Palmerton man will be honored with car cruise

A Palmerton man who was recently diagnosed with cancer is being honored by his community this weekend with a course of cruising cars.

Justin Greenzweig, who, alongside his wife of more than 30 years, Barb Greenzweig, founded the animal welfare nonprofit Palmerton Cat Project, found out he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer in May. In the month since, the community has come out to show their support, first with a drive-by birthday parade.

And this weekend, Heather Ahner, a Palmerton Cat Project volunteer and friend of the Greenzweigs, said Palmerton is gearing up to celebrate Justin once again.

Starting at noon on Saturday, cars will begin staging at the Palmerton Area High School. About an hour later, they will embark on a cruise around the neighborhood, starting at Fireline Road, then to Forest Inn Road, to Delaware Avenue, to Third Street, to Lafayette Avenue, and to Seventh Street.

The event, Ahner said, is inspired by Justin’s love of cars; many area car shows have been canceled because of COVID-19, so Ahner came up with the idea to bring the show to Justin.

Anyone wanting to participate must make a $5 minimum donation. Funds raised will be split between the cat project and offsetting some of Justin’s medical bills.

Ahner said she hopes Saturday’s cruise will “raise awareness” around pancreatic cancer, “and just togetherness” as well.

If Justin is able, he will serve as the procession’s grand marshal.

Social distancing must be maintained by anyone who takes part in the cruise, a Facebook page about the event notes.
