Schuylkill commissioners approve contracts

The Schuylkill County Commissioners have approved three contracts for work at the county courthouse which represent the final steps of a multiyear improvement project.

The overall project included replacing the courthouse roof, fixing walls at the jail, and the $3 million renovation of 410 Center St., which took place in 2018.

“We did a lot of great improvements here, certainly some much-needed projects, and we’re looking to get those completed,” said County Administrator Gary Bender.

On Wednesday the commissioners contracted with Antz Energy to replace the HVAC system in the courthouse annex for $48,600.

They also approved a contract with Z&M Painting and Repair for repairs and painting on the side of the courthouse annex, at a cost of $42,790.

Finally, they approved a contract with Victor C. Muncy to replace broken windows on the courthouse annex for a cost of $83,848.

The projects are expected to get underway in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, work continues on the courthouse roof, and driveway paving and jail projects are expected to get underway soon. Bender said the work has not been significantly disrupted by COVID-19.

The replacement of the courthouse’s slate roof cost $751,280.

The project was funded through a $5 million loan the county took out in 2018. More than $3 million went to the renovation of 410 Center St. The former Children and Youth building, it was vacant when that agency relocated. The county decided to renovate the building and use it for the county’s mental health/disability services program, the drug and alcohol program, and Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley.
