Mahoning Township looks into ‘problem property’

A property in Mahoning Township has caused a long-standing issue for its supervisors. Now, they’ve ordered the chief of police to investigate it.

The private plot on Pine Hollow Drive is unkempt, said Supervisor Myron Blahy, and it’s become a spot for drug users.

A “dilapidated” trailer sits on the parcel, and Blahy added that he’s received multiple complaints from neighbors about it.

The township’s zoning officer, Carl Faust, also photographed a needle on the land when citing the owners for zoning violations earlier this month, according to the township’s municipal office.

“It’s a problem property,” Blahy said, “and it’s getting worse.”

Because of the alleged drug use, the matter now falls to Mahoning Police. The board issued a directive to the head of the force, Audie Mertz, at their meeting Wednesday: Look into the property and deliver a written report on it.

Mertz was not in attendance.

The board of supervisors of Mahoning Township also decided Wednesday to grant preliminary approval for Lehigh Valley Health Network’s subdivision plan.

The plan splits the hospital’s 35-acre parcel in two, with one lot measuring around 9 acres and the other nearly 25.
