Carbon ready for election

Carbon County is ready for the primary election on Tuesday.

During a special meeting of the county election board, the board certified the voter registration totals, filled vacancies and talked about mail-in and absentee ballot totals.

The action means that on Tuesday, 17,615 Democrats and 19,932 Republicans will be able to cast a vote.

In the 2016 presidential primary, about 40 percent of voters in those two parties voted.

There have been many challenges the elections bureau has been working through as it prepared because of changes that were necessary due to the coronavirus, including getting enough poll workers, consolidating precincts, social distancing and protecting everyone if they choose to head to their voting precincts.

In addition to the pandemic, the bureau also faced the new mail-in option.

Lisa Dart, elections director, said that the county received 6,677 applications for mail-in, absentee, military and civilians overseas for this election by the May 26 deadline.

Of that number, 3,700 ballots have already been filled out and returned.
