Woman who provided pills to former Lansford councilman enters guilty plea

A woman, who along with five others, was accused of providing a former Lansford councilman and his girlfriend with pills, entered a guilty plea Thursday afternoon in Carbon County court.

Janet Mary Martino, 48, of Lansford, appeared before Judge Steven R. Serfass to plead to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. In exchange for the plea, the state Attorney General’s office agreed to drop counts of corrupt organization and criminal conspiracy.

Serfass told Martino that under state sentencing guidelines she faces a minimum prison term of somewhere between 18 and 24 months in prison.

Martino was one of six charged by the AG’s office with supplying prescription pills including oxycodone to Matthew Walsh, a former Lansford councilman, and his girlfriend Danielle Grochowski. The pills were prescribed to the defendants for legitimate reasons, but the Attorney General’s Office has alleged that they illegally sold them to Walsh and Grochowski.

Both Walsh and Grochowski have pleaded guilty to drug charges and are awaiting sentencing.

Arrested with Martino were Eileen Patricia Hargett, Ellen Lee Crowell, Michael Vincent Crowell, Nina Renee Hofstetter and Kimberly Ann Kokinda.

Walsh and Grochowski were arrested in May 2019 following a raid at their Lansford home and Walsh’s business, Walsh Precious Metals.

Walsh resigned from his position on council in October 2019.

At the time of the arrest of the six, the AG office said that Walsh and Grochowski cooperated in the investigation that led to the charges being filed.

Serfass accepted the plea but deferred sentencing ordering the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
