East Penn road crew work is discussed

East Penn Township road crews have returned to work.

Members discussed issues surrounding social distancing precautions the workers would need to follow along with the protocols put in place by the Wolf administration.

The supervisors discussed obstacles the road crew will encounter maintaining 6-foot-apart distancing and how it related to being able to perform some jobs.

A road crew member described the example of operating an 8-foot-wide paver with three men, and the challenges that will arise with certain jobs that the township has been forced to put on hold for several weeks. Due to the foreseeable obstacles, it was decided that jobs such as patching and paving, or any job where road crew cannot maintain distancing will have to be further delayed.

Road crew members will, however, do what they can, such as mowing, until social distancing restrictions are further relaxed.

Oil tank

Due to failure of the oil tank at East Penn’s community center, removal of the tank and remediation cleanup of the site by Rapid Response had to take place.

After discussion, board members decided that if they can, the township would like to handle the heating system installation and masonry work to rebuild the wall rather than get quotes or bids to complete the project.

They also identified the $4,000 cost of Rapid Response’s recommendation to apply a microbial agent to the floor while sealing the area.

Secretary Jillyan Sterling said that insurance doesn’t cover what they consider to be an environmental issue combined with an overall lack of maintenance to the tank over the years. So far the township has spent $4,257.87 on remediation of the community center’s oil tank leak problem.

Tax collection

The township would like to remind residents that tax collector Thomas Beck is accepting mail-in only tax payments. Due to the virus, no drop-offs will be accepted at his home as he had done for many years prior.

Electronic recycling

A tentative electronic recycling event is set to take place for township residents on Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the municipal building.
