Tamaqua man faces gun charge after conviction

A Tamaqua man has been charged with having guns after he was convicted of a felony.

Police said on May 9 at 11:03 a.m. a report was made with police that George Darker, 75, of the 400 block of Hazle Street, Tamaqua, had firearms in his possession and it was believed he was not allowed due to a prior criminal conviction.

A video made on April 23 at 7:10 p.m. showed an unidentified man carrying two camouflage rifle bags into Darker’s residence. A criminal check showed that Darker had pleaded guilty to a felony burglary charge in July 1980 and also had multiple other charges including theft, simple assault and driving under the influence.

On Tuesday about 11:30 a.m., police served a search warrant on Darker’s residence and recovered a .22-caliber rifle, a .12 gauge Mossberg shotgun, a 30-06 Remington rifle and ammunition for all three guns. The guns were confiscated and placed into evidence.

Darker was arraigned on a charge possessing guns when prohibited before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, and released after posting 10 percent of $10,000 bail.
