Fundraiser to benefit West Penn 1-year-old

West Penn Rod and Gun Club will host a poker run, basket raffle, bake sale and spaghetti dinner for a 1-year-old who has faced medical complications since birth.

Austin Klein, of West Penn Township, was born two months premature in May 2018 and had several complications that landed him in the hospital for six months following birth.

While he came home in November, Austin has been back in the hospital for multiple surgeries, bringing his lifetime total to six.

“We’re holding this fundraiser to help the family with the financial burden of things such as medical supplies, medical equipment and weekly appointments in Philadelphia,” said Tonia Kunkel. “There is a long road ahead for Austin, but he has conquered all of his hurdles so far.”

The event is scheduled for Aug. 24 at the club, 1047 Clamtown Road, Tamaqua, with kickstands up for the poker run at 11 a.m. The basket raffle will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the spaghetti dinner will start at 2 p.m. and continue until the food is sold out.

Kunkel said they are asking for basket donations or gift cards to be used for the raffle. All of the funds raised will be given directly to the family, which has said it will give 10 percent back to the Ronald McDonald House to further assist another family living there with a sick child.
