Safer Streets to host fourth annual event on Saturday

The Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet will host its annual overdose awareness walk on Saturday at the Owl Creek Reservoir.

The annual event will be the organization’s fourth and the concept of the event has significantly evolved from its original idea.

“It started with a simple walk through town and developed into this,” President John Sienkiewicz said. “First year we had just over 350 people, and that jumped to over 650. Last year we had 1,500, so this year we’re expecting more. This is the second year at Owl Creek.”

Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet is a nonprofit organization that was founded shortly after Sienkiewicz and his wife, Tammy, who is the treasurer, lost their daughter a few years ago.

“We do preventative drug education,” John said. “We do a lot of helping people find recovery beds at rehabs and we do referrals. If you go through Safer Streets and complete rehab, we will sponsor you for two weeks at an approved recovery house, one that we approved and has exactly what we’re looking for.”

The event starts at noon and concludes at 6 p.m. There are many reasons to check out the event, which includes keynote speaker Brandon Novak from the MTV series “Jackass” and “Viva La Bam.”

“The day is action packed,” said Sienkiewicz. “There are carnival games, all kids 18 and under receive five free tickets to play games. Additionally tickets are five tickets for $2. This year we stepped up our game with over 11 carnival games and bigger prizes. We have had a lot of donations from many companies and sponsors.”

Three bands, Bad Maggie, Big Ger and Cody Wiley, will perform throughout the afternoon. There will be plenty of food, drinks and snow cones for kids. Try your luck at winning the impressive grand prize of the day.

“They are doing a Kalahari Resort six-person family suite giveaway for one night with the water park included. You have to go around to the vendors with a question card. Each one of the vendors will answer questions, you get it stamped and turn it in. We will announce the winner at 6 p.m.”

The Schuylkill County Sheriff’s office will have a drug take-back setup all day. The Candlelight Walk will be at 6 p.m. before the butterfly release, which is a suggested $5 donation. Admission to the event is completely free.

“This is open to everyone,” Sienkiewicz said. “This is not just for individuals with a substance-use disorder, it’s open for the entire community. It’s a fun-filled day where you can come out and enjoy the day with the kids.”
