Eagle Scout Jeremy Adam Major has been making a difference at his school and the community. At the Chestnuthill Township meeting, he presented the work he did for his Eagle Scout promotion. The project turned an outside area at Pleasant Valley Middle School into a learning environment for teachers, students and staff.

“What I did for my Eagle Scout project was build four picnic tables and landscaped two 90-foot sections at Pleasant Valley Middle School,” Major said. “When I was looking for a project, I decided to ask my principal about doing a project, and he said, ‘For the longest time, teachers have been asking for picnic tables for an outdoor eating area.’ ”

When Major heard this idea, he decided that the tables wouldn’t be enough. He wanted to landscape around the picnic tables to make a pleasant atmosphere for the teachers and staff.

“It didn’t become just an outdoor eating area,” Major said. “It also became an outdoor classroom. Classes go out there, be in the open fresh area and learn.”

Major said he worked hard during the landscaping phase. He used weed blocker, and then used mulch and dirt for plants that were spaced 4 feet apart from each other. With the help of his peers, the landscaping phase only took them one day to finish. Major thanked all his peers for their participation.

Major used his school’s wood shop to cut the pieces for the picnic tables. With the help of a carpenter, he built all four tables for the school. There are plaques on the tables that have his name and Eagle Scout title engraved on them. Major said that after almost a year of being built, the tables have “held up beautifully.”

Chestnuthill Supervisor Chris Eckert said these projects make a difference for the community.

“These guys do such a great job,” Eckert said. “It’s a real credit to scouting and to the Boy Scouts that are dedicated and provide these projects for the community. This is the future of our country here, folks.”
