There are a lot of new things happening in the Carola Sauers Children’s Library section inside Dimmick Memorial Library in Jim Thorpe in the coming months.

For example, the Lego Club is a new program that aims to build a love of learning while also educating young minds through hands-on activities with Legos.

Kara Edmonds, director of the library, said that the Lego Club really ties into the new STEM curriculum that is happening in the communities and schools.

“It provides creative thinking,” she said. “There is a challenge they do so it is working side-by-side with others.”

There are engineering challenges, as well as free thinking challenges to provide a little something for everyone.

Recently, the children in the club were challenged to construct a Lego bridge that could hold the weight of a tuna can.

“They are really doing some interesting projects,” Edmonds said.

The Lego Club is held from 4-5:30 p.m. every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, and all ages are welcome.

Other programs include story time at 10 a.m. every Tuesday that aims to promote reading through a story, crafts and fun activities; and Dimmick Lab Rats: STEM Saturdays, which is held at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of the month.

In addition, as part of the Jim Thorpe Earth Day Festival on April 27, Dimmick will have special readings of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” at 10 a.m.; Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” at 11:30 a.m.; and a Waiting for Wings Butterfly Show with Mari Gruber from Bear Mountain Butterflies at 1 p.m.

A summer reading program for children and young adults is also in the works, and information about the program will be announced soon.
