Run for the Red Pocono Marathon, Half and 5K Sunday

The Run for the Red Pocono Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K Road Race will be held Sunday. The event, in its 13th year, raises money for American Red Cross Disaster Relief in the Pocono Mountains.

Both the full and half marathons start at 7 a.m. at Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit. The 5K road race steps off at 8 a.m. at Stroudsburg High School. The full marathon and 5K finish in the Stroudsburg High School stadium while the half marathon finishes at the Crescent Lodge in Paradise Valley.

This year’s 5K is dedicated in memory of Dr. Lorraine Hamel, who was struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver while running on Feb. 28. Hamel had previously completed the Run for the Red Pocono Marathon. Community groups are invited to run this year’s 5K in her memory. A discounted rate per runner is available for groups of 10 or more.

The marathon serves as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon in 2018. A total of $6,000 in prize money is awarded for the top three male and female finishers of the Pocono Marathon this year.

Runners can register at the Runner’s Expo from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the cafeteria of Stroudsburg High School. Runners can also pick up their packets.
