Carbon man given state prison term after admitting to threats

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday after he pleaded guilty to one count of terroristic threats.

John Allen, 37, of Tresckow, entered the plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika and was then sentenced to serve one to two years in a state correctional institution.

State police at Hazleton received a call from the Carbon County communications center on Aug. 23, 2017, around 11 p.m. that there was a woman screaming in the area of the unit block of East Maple Street in Tresckow. The victim told troopers that Allen, also known as Boota, came to her home, produced a gun and said he was going to kill her, court papers state.

She told him that she had to go to the bathroom and escaped from a second-floor window. She fell about 16 feet to the ground, called out for help and was assisted by neighbors. The victim told police that she jumped because she truly believed that Allen was going to kill her.

A neighbor saw Allen leave the home in a pickup, and video surveillance shows him leaving the home four minutes after the 911 call came in, according to court papers.

The victim suffered compound fractures to the right wrist, radius and ulna. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest notified police that she underwent surgery for her injuries Aug. 25.

Allen, currently an inmate in the county prison, is also facing a state parole violation proceeding and has pending drug charges in Luzerne County.

In addition to the prison term, Matika ordered Allen to perform 50 hours of community service when paroled, pay restitution for medical bills of $3,573.57, pay court costs of about $1,000 and have no contact with the victim. He was given credit for 203 days already spent in prison on the charge.
