Produce stand owner, Towamensing supervisors clash

Produce stand owner Gerald George challenged Towamensing Township's board of supervisors on several property-based violations during Thursday's meeting, but the board held firm on the laws.

"What are the three violations on that property?" George asked the board in the midst of the meeting, referencing the land occupied by his stand between 6875 and 6965 Interchange Road.Supervisor Guy Seifert turned the matter over to zoning officer Carl Faust, who explained the situation to George."You have no permits issued for anything you're doing on there, you have no highway occupancy permit from the state of Pennsylvania, and you have no land development plan, which is a requirement when you take a piece of land and develop it for commercial use," Faust said.George argued that the highway access issue was irrelevant, as the highway entrance to the property had been there for 45 years. Faust later explained that the highway access point had to be evaluated for safety, and that there had been in excess of 10 near accidents at the location."The real problem is, you have decided that you are going to do what you are going to do without any oversight from the township," Seifert said to George.Vice Chairman Thomas Newman and Seifert made no indication that any of the violations would be dismissed.Newman concluded the matter by moving on to other business. In other business• Towamensing Township's trick or treat night has been set for Saturday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., rain or shine.• The annual fall cleanup weekend was set for from 8 a.m. to 2
