Summit Hill street project scheduled for 2018

A major street reconstruction project slated for Summit Hill won't happen until next year.

The resurfacing of Route 902 in the town will be placed on bid in November. It was slated to begin in spring and be finished in September 2018, council member William O'Gurek said.O'Gurek said he spoke with state Sen. John Yudichak about the project, which is being done by the state Department of Transportation, and was told it won't be occurring this year.In other business:• Council member David Wargo received permission to head an Economic Development Committee in the borough.Appointed to serve on the committee with him were O'Gurek and Gregory Kosciolek.Wargo said the purpose of the committee is to look into how the borough can enhance its commercial tax base by attracting business."It's important to look at what we can do to foster growth in the community," he said.• Sherry Shellhammer was granted permission to block off the unit block of East Lehigh Street from Chestnut Street to Oak Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The purpose is for a poker run/pig roast and basket raffle to benefit the Julie Gower family, which was the victim of a tragic fire.Shellhammer told the council the event is being held at the Batter's Box.• Aurelia DeMatto was granted permission to pray the rosary on Oct. 14 at the gazebo in Ludlow Park.• The council denied a request for residents of the 200 block of East Fell Street to host a block party in September. The denial was due to liability insurance, the council said.• Several complaints were heard about properties with high grass.Secretary-Treasurer Kira Steber said anyone having complaints should call the borough hall. She said to remedy the situation, the borough must first send the property owner letters. If the residents or property owner don't proceed with cutting the grass, then the borough workers do it and the property owner is charged. Steber said often people never pay the amount owed.• Fittos said he received complaints about a large boat parked in front of a residence in town. He said police can't do anything as long as the boat is moved a minimum of every 10 days. He said a borough ordinance says trucks can't park in front of residences but it doesn't address boats.
