Carbon opens bids for senior food service

Carbon County is looking to spend over $1 million to feed some of the area seniors for the next five years.

On Thursday, the county commissioners opened bids for a five-year food service contract for the Area Agency on Aging. The contract covers approximately 65,000 meals annually at the five senior centers or frozen meals for the home delivery program.Dean Anthony's of Jim Thorpe submitted the apparent low bid of $1,378,650 for the five-year contract, which begins Sept. 1. Broken down, it is $5.05 per meal for the first year; $5.15, the second year; $5.25, the third year; $5.35, the fourth year; and $5.45, the fifth year.Current contract holder, Metz Culinary Management of Dallas, Pennsylvania, submitted a bid of $1,447,451.20.The commissioners then tabled the bids for one week so they can be reviewed by the Area Agency on Aging and county solicitor. The contract will be awarded next Thursday and the vendor will begin on Sept. 1.
