Weissport council discusses property, fire ordinances

New ordinances were discussed at the Weissport Borough Council meeting on Monday evening in an attempt to dissuade people from keeping their houses, porches and yard unkempt.

No decisions were made as the council president was unable to attend, but the ordinances would be in response to public complaints made at meetings about houses being rundown and overrun with people.Duane Dellecker responded via a letter read aloud at the council meeting. Eight letters were sent out to various people regarding their property violations, but only one has responded.Formal enforcement will be necessary if the other owners do not respond. He recommends that additional complaints should be put on a complaint form and submitted so action can be taken with confidentiality. The issue of burning also came up again. According the Weissport's burning ordinance, fires must contain a bottom, sides and a cover. This excludes portable outdoor grills fired by propane or charcoal and designed for food preparation.Burning is permitted on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Each burning container must be 25 feet away from any structure or building and 20 feet away from property lines and sidewalks. In other business, Jake Boyer proposed that the Betty Mullen Brey memorial be revealed on Sept. 23 in the park. We are cracking down on abandoned vehicles, properties that are in disarray, and any other illegal activity being conducted in the town. Don't bring your garbage into our borough anymore or you will face legal ramifications," Krammes said.In other business, the borough approved the purchase of new police badges at $2 per patch and a minimum order of 50 patches, costing the borough $100.The cake walk will be held at the Founder's Day celebration on June 3.
