West Penn to add secretary for police

West Penn Township plans to add a part-time secretary for its police department.

On a 2-0 vote, the board of supervisors, with Chairman Jim Dean absent, agreed Monday morning to advertise the position.Supervisor Tony Prudenti said at a meeting earlier this month that a part-time secretary would work about 24 hours a week.Prudenti said the secretary would help free up township police Chief Brian Johnson, as well as patrol officers.Johnson previously said the police department gets a lot of walk-in traffic, and handles about 100 phone calls per month.Prudenti suggested the move would be a way for the township to not have to add another full-time officer. Also on Monday, the board agreed to advertise for a part-time secretary to fill in for when current township secretary Bobbijean Muffley is on disability leave. In other matters, the board also agreed to install a door inside the township police station, as well as put up a privacy fence, at a total cost of $200.Those decisions come following the board's meeting earlier this month in which several upgrades for the police department were discussed.Prudenti also suggested at that meeting that a holding cage, a part-time cleaning person, and blacktop should all be included as part of upgrades to the police department.
