Mahoning holds book swap event

Summer reading lists in Lehighton will have a few new titles following a book swap held Thursday at Mahoning Elementary School.

The "Give a Book, Take a Book" event allowed students to bring as many books as they wanted in to the school and in return, they could take that many different books home with them."We're coming up on summer break and some new books for the students will be good for those rainy days or long car rides," said Shirley Rodgers, a Mahoning teacher who organized the event. In addition to being able to trade books, students could visit one of several themed reading stations set up throughout the building.Themes included "Cat in the Hat," "A Bad Case of Stripes," "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and more.Teachers and students dressed up as characters from the stories being read in the classrooms."Our teachers and staff are either here or they have helped out cutting things out or making photocopies," Rodgers said. "They never hesitated to participate and we also have some PTO members here helping out. It's a fun night out and gives the community something to do."Lehighton Area Middle School, which holds a book swap every year, could not this year due to renovations at the building. It hopes to return its event next year.
