Tamaqua Hunger Walk events are planned for this weekend

Now in its third year, the Tamaqua Hunger Walk has expanded from a one day to a weekend event, scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday. Organized by the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, the event hopes to combat hunger by supporting Tamaqua's food banks at the Salvation Army, Trinity United Church of Christ and Primitive Methodist Church.

This year's event will begin with an "Empty Bowl Dinner" from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturdayat Zion Lutheran Church, Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets. In preparation for the dinner, crafters created unique bowls at the Tamaqua Community Art Center over several weekends during April. Bowls were also donated by the art departments at Tamaqua Area High School and Freeland MMI, as well as local ceramic artisans. As long as supplies last, participants of the dinner will receive a free bowl. Soups for the dinner are being donated by local restaurants and churches. Also on Saturday, a "Family Film Night" will be held at 7 p.m. at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church on East Broad Street. The film will be "Grace Unplugged," a Christian musical film about an 18-year-old girl's journey as she discovers that God and family are more important than stardom. Admission is a nonperishable food donation. Monetary donations are also welcome. The Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday.
