Activities planned for state parks in Schuylkill County

Several activities are planned for the Tuscarora and Locust Lake state parks in Schuylkill County.

Envionmental Education programs have been scheduled for May 28. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. a park naturalist will explore the mountain behind Locust Lake and visit Silver Creek Fire Tower. The hike is 8 miles in length and difficult. The pine stands and brush are perfect habitat for birds and other wildlife.Meet in the visitor parking lot at the park which is located before the contact station. Bring a lunch. Pets are allowed by must be leashed and get along with people and other pets. For more information call Robin Tracey at 570-467-2506.From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Redcreek Wildlife Center, Peggy Hentz, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and owner of the center, will present a "Birds of Prey" program. The program will be held in the Locust Lake amphitheatre at 6:30 p.m. There will be live birds on hand.The program is free, but donations are welcome. In case of inclement weather, the presentation will be held in the program shelter near the camp store.On Sunday, a "fish for free day" program will be held in the shelter at Locust Lake from 9 to 11:30 a.m. No fishing license is needed to fish on this day, however, all other regulations apply. Some fishing poles and tackle will be available. A state fish and boat commission officer and campground host will be on hand for instruction. A demonstration on fileting and frying fish will follow. Participants must bring their own bait. Call Tracey for more information.A "Spirit of Tuscarora Trail" hike is planned for Sunday, led by conservation volunteer Pap Knauss, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The trail is 4.5 miles in length and moderate in difficulty. The trail winds through several diverse habitats with a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Lake cove. Meet in the upper beach parking lot near the trail head. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Shine only.On Memorial Day, at 9 a.m. a hike to Wolf Creek Falls in Saint Clair will be held. Participants will meet at the north end of the Walmart parking lot off Route 61 in the Coal Creek Commerce Center in Saint Clair. The hike is 5 miles and rated difficult. The hike is dog-friendly, but all pets must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Bring water and a lunch.Due to limited space, registration is required by calling Tracey.
