House fire displaces Lehighton family

A family of five in Lehighton has been displaced after a bedroom in their home caught fire Thursday night.

Borough Fire Chief Patrick Mriss said thefire broke out at 8 p.m. on a second-floor bedroom at 220 Carbon St.Upon arrival, Mriss said firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the second floor, at which time crews found fire in the bedroom.Mriss said the fire was quickly extinguished, and was under control within about a half-hour.He said a mother and two of her children were home at the time of the incident, but were all able to make it out of the home uninjured.Mriss said the home sustained moderate damage, but is unliveable due to the loss of utilities.The American Red Cross is assisting the family with financial support for immediate food, shelter and clothing.Mriss said the fire has been ruled accidental.Lehighton Fire Police maintained traffic control at the scene.
