Lane restriction in Jim Thorpe today

Work on the Route 903 bridge is set to impact traffic Thursday in Jim Thorpe Borough.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that Route 209 will be a single lane between Route 903 and Liberty Street.Sean Brown, PennDOT spokesman, said the single lane restriction is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.The work is a part of a $28 million project that will change how motorists cross the Lehigh River, from Route 209 to the east side of Jim Thorpe. This week, PennDOT spokesman Ron Young outlined the traffic patterns on the new bridge, which is 1,000 feet upstream on the Lehigh River from the existing one."There will be two lanes of traffic on Route 903 south toward Route 209 with the left lane being the left turn lane and the right lane being the right turn lane to Route 209," said Young."There will be a single lane on Route 903 north."The intersection of Route 903 and Main Street will have a stop sign on the Main Street approach, Young said."Traffic exiting the bridge can go straight, turn right, or turn left (yielding to oncoming traffic)," Young added. At a Jim Thorpe Borough Council workshop in February, it was announced that PennDOT is shooting to have the bridge open by Memorial Day.When the bridge opens, the borough also plans on making traffic flow changes. An ordinance has been advertised that would route traffic one way on Front Street from North to Center Street when both lanes would be active again down to the Jim Thorpe Market.Second Street would also become one way from Center to North Street.Mayor Michael Sofranko said PennDOT would pay for the signage and line painting as part of the bridge project.
