Pleasant Valley routs PM West

The blustery winds and plummeting temperatures in the air would typically send most hibernating animals retreating to slumber. However, the Bears of Pleasant Valley failed to recognize their cue from Mother Nature, as they ran rampant over Pocono Mountain West in their 42-14 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Led by another outstanding performance from senior tailback Austyn Borre, who rushed 19 times for 255 yards and three touchdowns, the winners improve to 2-3 on the season, after a 0-3 start to the year."It's great to get the win and these kids work their tails off in practice for us," Pleasant Valley head coach Dave Pacchioni said afterward. "In a shortened week with the rain and everything, I want to say that we had probably two of the best practice days that we've had all year this week. So it was great to see them come out in the second half and do what we did in practice all week long."Pleasant Valley clung to a 14-6 lead at the intermission. Immediately after the break, Pleasant Valley went to work-- and scored on all four of its possessions in the second half, to rout the Panthers, enforce the mercy rule, and reel off its second straight win.Their first drive in the pivotal third quarter started on the Bear five-yard line, and 11 plays and 95 yards later, Mikey Brown connected with Justin Richardson on an 11-yard strike that upped their lead to 21-6 with just under five minutes left in the frame. As impressive as that drive was, their next two possessions required only one play from scrimmage to get to the end zone, as Borre traveled 84 yards for a score, and teammate Trent Thomas rumbled in 15 yards for the second. Those two lightning quick scores ballooned the advantage to 35-6 with 26 ticks left in the third."It's a huge win," Borre admitted. "We're trying to keep it up and that was just step number two in the process. Our offense is really dynamic and we're getting better every week. We're showing we can run and throw and we're getting more and more confident."If things weren't worse enough for the Panthers, their ensuing drive resulted in a fumble that gave the Bears the ball on the Panther 20. Six plays later, Brown found Daniel Hunter for his team's final score of the night. With the scoreboard reading 42-6 with 9:15 left in the game, the clock began running non-stop, which sent the PV faithful into celebration."I thought tonight, we did a great job of making adjustments," Pacchioni said. "We wanted to pressure their young quarterback, so we blitzed and I thought we did a much better job of tackling in the second half, where we might not have in the first. We are going to need to practice tough again and I'm going to be stressing to them that we need to hit our gaps and keep working hard.""FUMBLE-ITIS"...Both Pleasant Valley and Pocono Mountain West let the ball slip out of their hands three times, while both sides lost possession one of those three times. While the Bears lost theirs on their first possession of the night, it was the Panthers' turnover that proved more costly, as it set up an integral score for the winners, setting up a first-and-ten on the Panther 20.WIND BENEATH MY PUNTS...Both teams benefited from a tail wind on kickoffs and punts throughout, as the blistering breezes helped plenty of booted balls. The Bear's Dean Krcic had a 59-yard punt and two touch-backs in the game. Meanwhile, the Panthers managed to get off a 71-yard boot to start the second half, and followed it up with a 64-yarder, as well.DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK...After a team begins their season with three straight losses, many pre-season goals disappear and create possible pessimism in the locker rooms. However, the Bears managed to pick up two wins in a row to spark up the positive atmosphere throughout the school and fan base.
