Few local races on Schuylkill County ballot

There are few local races on Tuesday's primary election in the Times News coverage area in Schuylkill County.

In a local election year, there are seats on borough councils, township supervisors, and school boards up for election along with other posts, such as constables and auditors.Following is a rundown of area boroughs and townships.TamaquaIn Tamaqua there are four four-year term seats up for council with four Republicans on the ballot. The GOP candidates are Brian Connely, Thomas Cara, Ronald Bowman and R. Daniel Evans.There is also a two-year term up with Connely also seeking the GOP nod for that position.No Democrats have filed for any of the positions.CoaldaleIn Coaldale incumbent Mayor Joel Johnson, a Democrat, is the only name on the ballot for the four-year term.There is no Republican seeking the post.There is a GOP race for a seat on council, with four to be elected and five Republicans seeking nominations and one Democrat.The GOP hopefuls are Thomas D. Keerans, Vincent R. Miller Sr., Claire S. Remington, Michael J. Doerr and Brenda L. Hosler. The seats are four-year terms.Yvonne Stoffey is the lone Democrat seeking a seat and will be on the November ballot.Rush TownshipThere is a race for the Republican nomination for a six-year term as supervisor.Incumbent Robert Leibensperger is being challenged by William Boyer for the nomination. There are no Democrats seeking the position.Walker TownshipIn Walker Township incumbent William R. McMullen is unopposed for the Republican nomination for another six-year term as supervisor. There are no Democrats running.Schuylkill TownshipIn Schuylkill Township there is a race for the Democratic and Republican nominations for a six-year term as supervisor.Frank Fabrizio and Dan Decindio are seeking the Democratic nod.On the GOP side incumbent Christine Verdier is being challenged by Joseph Zelinsky.West Penn TownshipIn West Penn Township Republican incumbent Tony Prudenti is unopposed for another six-year term as supervisor. No Democrats are running.Blythe TownshipThere is a race for the Democratic nod for a six-year term for supervisor. The candidates are Adam J. Nothstein and Cynthia Borchick. No Republicans have filed.Kline TownshipIn Kline Township Carmen Cara is unopposed for the GOP nomination for a six-year term as supervisor. There are no Democrats running.Mahanoy CityIn Mahanoy City there are four seats, four-year terms, for council to be elected. There is a race for the Democratic nod with five candidates on the ballot.The hopefuls are Robyn L. Sincavage, Louis Huber, Thomas R. Flamini, John A. Pytko and Francis P. Burke.Assured of a spot on the fall ballot are Republicans Diane Rachuck and Douglas Litwhiler.McAdooIn McAoo there are four seats, four-year terms, up on council. Four Democrats seeking the nominations are Marion Debalko, Daniel A. Gallagher, Peter P. Minneci and John Debalko. Edward J. Bielen Sr. is the lone GOP hopeful who will be on the November ballot.MiddleportIn Middleport there is a lack of candidates. There are two four-year terms, for council up with only one person on the ballot, Republican Elizabeth A. Borger.New PhiladelphiaIn New Philadelphia there are three four-year term seats on council up for election. The Democrats have two candidates, Dennis A. Faust and Mary Louise Mimi Shanoskie. The GOP lone hopeful is Debra A. Smith-Sullivan.New RinggoldIn New Ringgold there is a lack of candidates. Three, four-year terms for council are up with only Republican Elizabeth B. Fry on the ballot.Ryan TownshipIn Ryan Township there is a six-year term for supervisor to be elected in the fall. Incumbent Republican Clyde Champ Holman is the lone candidate of either party.School districtsTamaqua Area: There are five four-year term, seats up on the board. There are five candidates and all have cross-filed for both the Republican and Democratic nominations.They are Melanie I.S. Dillman, Robert W. Betz, Daniel E. Schoener, Wanda Y. Zuber and Larry A. Wittig.Blue Mountain: There are five four-year term seats up on the board with five candidates cross-filing. They are Scott Reichert, Mary Joe Moss, Mark B. Hoover, David Lafko and Michelle Vesay.Mahanoy Area: There are five four-year terms up for election to the board with six candidates seeking both nominations by cross-filing.The six are Nancy Boyle, Michael J. Mistishen, Nikki Stetson, Gary R. Gnall, Daniel Lynch and Larry Levy.Panther Valley: Seven people are seeking five nominations on both tickets for the five four-year terms up for grabs in the school district.On the Democratic side are Anthony DeMarco, Michelle Markovich, Gary Porembo, Renee DeMelfi, Wayne V. Gryzik, Joseph J. Faenza Jr. and Jeffrey J. Markovich.All of the candidates, except Faenza, have cross-filed and are seeking Republication nominations too.Voters in Coaldale cast votes for directors in the school district.
