Penn Forest Supervisors sell snowplow

For the past two months, Penn Forest Township supervisors have advertised to sell two of the township's 2012 Ford F550 dump trucks. At Monday evening's meeting, a sealed bid for $33,011.20 was received from A Bug's Life Inc. of Brodheadsville for one of the vehicles.

Chairman Warren Reiner made a motion to accept the bid for the truck, which has 10,984 miles on it. The motion to sell the truck was not unanimous."I do not agree with selling the trucks," Supervisor Judy Knappenberger said. "We bought those trucks to save the taxpayers money. The year prior to purchasing the trucks we spent $152,000 on snowplowing contracts. The next year we only spent $77,768. That's a considerable savings."Knappenburger went on the say that this year the township would be paying $134 per hour versus $60 per hour of snowplowing."Last year we spent over $15,000 in maintenance on those trucks," Reiner was quick to point out. "That doesn't include the fuel, two tires and two wheels we needed to replace or the 25 pairs of windshield wipers.""The salt destroys these trucks, it eats through brake lines. Those trucks have depreciated $30,000 in two years. It's not worth it," Reiner said. The board agreed to re-advertise the second truck because they did not receive any acceptable bids for it.In other business, the supervisors passed a motion which states that if any township resident sends correspondence directly to the township solicitor which causes the solicitor to bill the township, the township will, in turn, bill the resident for the solicitor's time."If you have anything for the township, you should send it to the township confidential secretary," Supervisor Christine Fazio said. "If we deem it needs to be forwarded to the solicitor, then we will make that determination."There were a number of personnel matters this month. In a special executive meeting held earlier in the month, the supervisors agreed to hire Janalee Walck as township treasurer. Walck will be paid $15 an hour and will be a union employee. The supervisors also agreed to hire a part-time laborer for the transfer station. Paul Gallagher was hired at $13 an hour.Bills in the amount of $53,539.19 were paid. The annual year-end meeting was set for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 29.
