Menu options spur complaints

Count students in the Northern Lehigh School District among those who are dissatisfied with their food menu offerings.

Superintendent Michael Michaels told the school board on Monday that the district has concerns over the issue, and said the students don't like the menus."We're very concerned with the meals that are being served (districtwide)," Michaels said. "(The students) said they would rather not eat than eat what they're being served."Food service director Sue Bahnick said, "A lot of schools are pulling out of the program, and it's costing us (districts) more to eat."Michaels said, "We have to be very concerned about that."The menus are part of the new regulations put into effect by Michelle Obama and the Agricultural Department.Third-day enrollment decreasesAlso as part of his report, Michaels briefly alluded to the district's third-day enrollment.This year, the district had 1,629 students as part of its third-day enrollment, compared with 1,677 last year, a decrease of 48 students, according to Sherri Molitoris, co-director of business affairs and human resources.Student enrollment has continued to decline in the district in recent years, Molitoris said.In other business, the board:• Appointed Patricia Ingles as the administrative detention supervisor in the senior high school. She will work from 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays that warrant detention coverage throughout the 2014-15 school year. Her salary will be $20 per hour worked.• Appointed Ingles as the secondary Saturday detention monitor for the middle school and high school for the 2014-15 school year, working three hours every Saturday that warrants detention coverage. Her salary will be $20 per hour worked.• Appointed Michael Lehtonen as substitute secondary detention monitor for the high school for the 2014-15 school year. Work will be on an as-needed basis, and compensation will be $20 per hour worked.• Appointed Kelly Follweiler and Lehtonen as substitute secondary Saturday detention monitor for the middle school and high school for the 2014-15 school year, working as a substitute for three hours every Saturday that warrants substitute detention coverage. Their salary will be $20 per hour worked.• Approved Melissa Frederickson, pending verification of missing personnel file items, art, K-12; Jolynn Gazo, CLIU guest teacher; Bronwyn Green, health and physical education; Ines Heuser, CLIU guest teacher; Alexis Lloyd, pending verification of missing personnel file items, special education K-8, elementary, K-4; Seth McLaughlin, CLIU guest teacher; Gabriele Pergosky, pending verification of missing personnel file items, elementary grades 4-6, math and science, grades 7-8; Erwin Prutzman, business and technology education; and Patricia Sottolano, CLIU guest teacher, as substitute teachers for the 2014-15 school year at the 2014-15 substitute teacher rates as approved on the supplementary personnel salary schedule.• Approved Laura Olinger, pending verification of missing documents; Rosetta Strohl; and Anthony Thomas as substitute secretaries and aides for the 2014-15 school year at the 2014-15 substitute rates.• Approved Rosa George; Brittany Keyser, pending verification of missing documents; Laura Olinger, pending verification of missing documents; Anthony Thomas; and Barbara Tobisch, pending verification of missing documents, as substitute cafeteria workers for the 2014-15 school year at the 2014-15 substitute rates.• Approved Rosetta Strohl, Anthony Thomas and Matthew Waters as substitute custodians for the 2014-15 school year at the 2104-15 substitute rate.
