Price increases on Schuylkill prison roof

Putting a new roof on Schuylkill County's 163-year old jail just got a little more expensive.

Commissioners on Thursday approved a change order with Budget Renovations and Roofing of Shamokin for the project. The change order includes repointing an additional 52 square feet of face blocks for $1,761.The new total cost for the roof project is $408,766. The initial cost had been estimated at $404,975.Work on the project is almost finished, said county engineer Lisa Mahall.In May, commissioners had approved change orders to delete 94 feet of flashing, at a cost reduction of $1,292, and installing a new roof drain at a cost of $3,322.The changes resulted in an additional $2,030, bringing the total cost to $407,005.The county hired Budget in February. The money to pay for the project is from the county's capital improvements fund, and with $159,600 of a $21 million 2012 bond issue.The prison, on Sanderson Street in Pottsville, was built in 1851. The roof was last replaced 28 years ago when the county built a small addition onto the stone prison.In other matters Thursday, commissioners approved:• An addendum for the county drug and alcohol program that raises the cap on a contract with Treatment Trends from $24,900 to $27,600.• A request to seek bids to repair county bridge #92, on River Drive over Pine Creek in West Brunswick Township. Bids will be accepted in the controller's office until 3 p.m. Aug. 29.The bids will be opened on Sept. 3. The job may be awarded on Sept. 10.• The Luzerne/ Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board 2014-2015 budget of $5,662,279. The budget has been reviewed and approved by the Workforce Investment Board at its quarterly meeting on June 19.• An employee assistance program services agreement with Inroads at the Family Guidance Center from July 1 to June 30, 2015.The county will pay an administrative fee of $10 per covered full-time employee and an additional fee of $70 for each authorized counseling session. The cost to the county for 654 employees will be $6,540 plus the cost of the counseling sessions.
