Imagine being able to learn about Pennsylvania's No. 1 industry in a fun, hands-on way.

Enter the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab, provided by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation.A division of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation this week brought agriculture education to Slatington Elementary School.Stationed at the school Tuesday through Friday, students enter the lab to perform science experiments that teach lessons focused on farm, food, fiber and the environment.Fourth-grader Ty Moffitt clearly enjoyed the experience."It's really awesome," Ty said. "I love science, doing experiments and all that stuff."Mobile lab visits to schools are coordinated with the preparation of teachers and their class for the science experiments.A certified teacher travels with the lab to lead each class in the experiments. The ag lab is equipped with all the materials and supplies needed for the experiments.Experiments that are taught in the lab include germinating seeds under different conditions, creating crayons from soybeans and testing the water capacity of different soils.Jane Wessner, a mobile ag instructor, said the ag lab creates an opportunity for students to learn about the industry."It gives them an understanding of agriculture," Wessner said. "Beyond that, they learn about the scientific method, and the procedure behind that."A mobile lab can educate up to 900 students, and involve up to 30 teachers per week.
