A total of 3,745 cases were started in 2013 in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to an annual statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of the cases is as follows:

Assessment appeals, 23; civil actions, 366; custody complaints, 204; district justice appeals, 58; declaratory judgment, 1; divorce complaints, 210; ejectment complaints, 39; eminent domain/declaration of taking, 1; equity action, 1; license appeals, 32; mandamus actions, 2; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 319; name change petitions, 4; partition complaints, 2; protection from abuse petitions, 311; quiet title actions, 14; replevin complaints, 6; tax sales, 10; zoning appeals, 3; auditor/financial reports, 4; court appointments, 10; court rules; 2, judgments, 2,022; miscellaneous cases, 54; paternity suits, 5; stipulations/waivers of liens, 38; and writ of executions, 4.The office also received and processed 1,032 applications for U.S. Passports.Behrens' financial report shows $359,145.46 was generated last year as follows:Prothonotary's fees, $297,522.92; PFA Surcharge, courts, $501.40; PFA Surcharge Sheriff, $520.40; custody fees, $8,400; data processing charges, $52,146.61; and interest income, $54.13.The report points out departmental operational expenses for the last year amounted to $255,501.98, meaning the prothonotary's office generated a profit of $103,643.48 for the county in 2013.The prothonotary also remitted $39,335.46 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $690 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996.Another $13,363.01 was deposited in the Prothonotary's Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.
