Vandals damage Ginder playground

Vandals appear to be running amok at the Ginder Playground in Summit Hill.

Jodi McAndrew, the current chairman of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission, told the borough council last night that there's "a major, major issue with vandalism."Some of the damage that has been done, according to McAndrew, is:* Swings have been broken.* A newly installed ride was broken to the extent that it now presents a potential safety hazard.* Shingles were torn off a pavilion that was constructed as an Eagle Scout project.* Holes have been made in cinder blocks on one building.* A bathroom has been completely destroyed.McAndrew said police did question some juveniles about the problem, but she doesn't know if anything materialized as far as apprehending the responsible parties. The council briefly discussed installing a camera at the playground. Council member Michael Alabovitz said he was given an estimated price of $2,500 for a camera.Options will be explored regarding such surveillance, not only at the playground but for other areas of the borough, too.Meanwhile, the borough work force will look at the damaged equipment and either make repairs or remove it.McAndrew said the Rec Commission is going through a transition period, seeking new members and attempting to build up the treasury. She said the commission's annual Halloween program had to be canceled because of the lack of volunteers. The next event planned for the commission is Christmas on the Hill, which is scheduled for Dec. 14.She said an appeal was issued last month for new members. Since that appeal, one person has come forward. The council approved the appointment of Amber Zuber to the commission.
