The Summit Hill Lions Club is continuing its American flag program this week.

The program was resurrected earlier this year as a means of honoring and/or memorializing veterans from the community.For one-week periods, the club will fly the American flag at the Ludlow Park site to remember current and former town residents who gave service to our country.As the program continues this week, the flag will recognize the military service of the Shelton Brothers of Summit Hill. It will fly in honor of Phillip Shelton and in memory of Perry Shelton, who passed away Oct. 11.Phillip Shelton, a former borough mayor and councilman, served for 4-1/2 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, beginning with basic training at Parris Island, S.C.He then served in administration as a unit diary clerk handling recruits at Camp LeJeune, N.C., after which time he served in the Mediterranean, stationed at Quantico Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis.He was the grand marshal of the 2000 Summit Hill Memorial Day Parade.Perry Shelton served for three years in the Navy, having initially been trained at the Navy Recruit Training Command at Camps Nimitz and Decatur in San Diego, Calif., before working at the air terminal at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington State, in support of military aircraft.He later was deployed to Japan for 1-1/2 years with the USS Mars AFS-1, a supply ship assigned that provided support to the U.S. 7th Fleet in the western Pacific.He was the grand marshal of the 2011 Summit Hill Memorial Day Parade.Because of the adverse effect seasonal winds have on the flags, the program will end for the year after the week of Nov. 4.Town residents are invited to contact Lions Club members to have a family member or friend scheduled to be honored or memorialized with the startup of the program in early 2014 by calling Joseph O'Gurek Jr., 570-645-5171.The only stipulations are that the person being recognized is a current or former town resident and must have served in the Armed Services.
