PGC conducts prescribed burning on SGLs 141

Pennsylvania Game Commission land management officer for Carbon, Luzerne and Monroe counties Mike Beahm reports that more than 200 acres of prescribe burning were conducted on State Game Lands 141, Broad Mountain.

"The conditions were perfect when the burn was conducted," Beahm said. "Fire behavior, smoke dispersal, and overall results were exactly what our burn plan prescribed to accomplish our goals."It will be exciting to see the results as thing green up and mature throughout the summer and next several years. The Broad Mountain has so much diversity, and the habitats that exist really lend themselves prescribed fire for improvements."The burn plan called for up to 650 acres to be treated. The burn units that are not burned in 2013 will be completed in 2014."Beahm also reports that in Monroe County, the food and cover crews lowered the water level at Brady's Lake by 18 inches. This spring draw down should allow beneficial plants to grow in the exposed shoreline for waterfowl. In the fall the water level will be raised back up, flooding the vegetation and seed sources. During the fall migration this cover and food source will help waterfowl fuel up to continue their migration.According to Beahm, food and cover crews have also been active in the three counties during the spring planting season."Much of our food plot work is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation with the purchase of seed, fertilizer, lime and herbicide," Beahm said. "Our food plot plantings include the planting of clover, grains, turnips and native grasses."Special thanks go out to the Honey Hole Longbeards, Lower Lackawanna Longbeards and the Pocono Mountain Chapters for all their support. Without their partnership a lot of this work would not be possible."**********This year's Pennsylvania State Sportsmen's Association Pennsylvania State Trap Championships will be held, Saturday, June 8, through Sunday, June 16, at Valley Gun and Country Club, 405 Monastery Road, Elysburg.
