At the latest Jim Thorpe Area School Board meeting, there was discussion regarding proposed movement of 7th and 8th grade students from the Jim Thorpe Area Senior High School to the L. B. Morris Elementary School.

During public comment one person asked about the proposed movement of the 7th and 8th graders and the possible movement of the L. B. Morris Pre- Kindergarten (Pre-K) program. Later on, a parent also voiced concerns about possibly relocating the students.Superintendent Dr. Barbara Conway stated that the proposal is for the 7th graders at the high school to move to the L.B. Morris. The 8th graders would stay at the high school.She added that it would be a group of around 100 students moving to the L. B. Morris.The L.B. Morris is designed to be a K-8 school."We have been asked to examine everything, every option," stated Conway."The recommendation came as a result of taking a look at our demographics, our numbers over the past several years."Conway added that the numbers of Kindergarten students have stabilized.She added that the district will be instituting 3 new programs and two emotional support classrooms will be moving from the L.B. Morris to the Penn Kidder Campus.Conway also addressed the possibility of the L.B. Morris Pre-K moving.There is a possibility of the Pre-K, a state funded program, moving.The Pre-K advisor looked at the Family and Consumer Science classroom at the high school.Conway stated that the Family and Consumer Science classroom is designed as a child care center. The materials in the room and the enclosed court yard are designed for child care use.There is an informational meeting for the affected 7th graders and their parents on May 23rd. It will be at the L.B. Morris at 6 pm.There was also a meeting regarding looking at proposed boundary line changes.Conway said, "We have one building that's over crowded and we have one building that's under used."She added, "We have to examine everything. Everything is on the table and everything is open for discussion.""Nothing is engraved in stone but we are looking at everything," stated Conway.Conway added that right now this is a proposed discussion. The district wants parent input and other input.In other news:The School Board meeting scheduled for June 10th has been rescheduled for June 17th. The meeting will be held at the District Office at 7 p.m.
