Leaving a legacy.

That is how Tom Zellner of the Beltzville Lions Club, envisions the Lions Club's plans to plan flowering cherry and plum trees along the towpath of the Lehigh Canal Park."One day this will be a tourist destination comparable to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C." said Zellner.Until Tom can implement the plans to plan the flowering trees, there is a lot of work to be done.The Lions Club, under the umbrella of the Delaware and Lehigh National Corridor Commission, is planning to host a cleanup day Saturday, April 20 at Lock 13, Parryville. The clean up will include getting rid of stumps, trees, undergrowth, shrubs and trees that are overhanging the Lehigh Canal. The clean up will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch served at noon for those who take part in the clean up.Helping organize the clean up is Dennis Scholl, outreach coordinator for the D&LNCC.Scholl said that he will also put out the word to the D&L to bring volunteers in to help the Lions do the heavier work at the canal."While the Lions are taking the lead at this site, this is still a project of the D&L," said Scholl.Scholl said that the local Trail Tenders program spreads from the Lehigh Gap to Jim Thorpe. He noted that the D&L has access to several chainsaws, rakes, shovels and other heavy equipment.Heavy equipment is also being donated by Sugar Hollow Farms.Scholl said that Zellner's vision of the Lehigh Canal Park coincides with the D&L."We're pleased to partner with the Lions," said Scholl. "The Lions is the only group that has shown an interest in the Lehigh Canal Park, except for Boy Scouts."Scholl and Zellner are hoping to have more volunteers join in for the day, but is asking that volunteers preregister for the day so that there will be enough tools and refreshments available.Anyone interested in being part of the day should contact Zellner at Dennis Scholl at
