Man walking to Philadelphia was arrested for marijuana

A Philadelphia man was arrested in Mahoning Township on various charges, including possession of marijuana, after saying he was walking to his home city from the township - a distance of about 95 miles.

Mahoning Township Police Office-In-Charge Audie Mertz said that on March 10, at about 11:02 p.m., police were patrolling on Route 209 in the area of the Mansion House Hill.They observed Benjamin R. Kerns, 27, of Philadelphia, standing on the white line of the highway in a very dangerous spot.Mertz said as officers approached Kerns, they suspected he was under the influence of alcohol. Police said he stumbled into the roadway.Kerns told police he was walking home to Philadelphia because he had gotten separated from his friends.While officers were talking with Benjamin, he placed his backpack on top of a stone retaining wall along the shoulder of the roadway. The wall is adjacent to a steep embankment.Benjamin allegedly laughed at officers and knocked the bag over the wall and down the embankment.Officers climbed down the embankment and recovered the bag. Inside the bag, the police officers found marijuana.Mertz said that as a result of the incident Benjamin was charged with the following offenses and placed in Carbon County Prison:• Possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor• Possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor• Tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, a misdemeanor• Persistent disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.• Scattering rubbish, a summary offense.• Public drunkeness, a summary offense.
