5 injured in Mahoning crash

Five people were injured Thursday night, two seriously, in a two-vehicle crash in Mahoning Township. The crash occurred at 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Mahoning Drive East and Grist Mill Road. Police report four persons in a minivan were traveling north on Grist Mill Road and stopped at the stop sign with Mahoning Drive East. The driver attempted to make a left turn to go west on Mahoning Drive. In doing so on the blind curve, the van pulled into the path of an east bound sport utility vehicle. The SUV struck the van broadside. Fire companies from Mahoning Valley and Lehighton worked to extricate the victims from the wreckage. They were treated at the scene by members of the Mahoning Valley Ambulance and Lehighton paramedics who had numerous units on the scene. Two of the patients were flown from the nearby Jake Arner Memorial airport by Penn Star and MedEvac helicopters. Mahoning Township police, assisted by Lehighton police, are investigating the incident.
