The Carbon County Conservation District is looking for a new director to fill a vacancy.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, chairman, announced that the conservation district is still looking to fill a vacancy that was created by the passing of one of its board members.He said that the replacement would need to be from the public sector; and added that they would need to be available once a month for the group's monthly meeting.Conservation district directors oversee how people in the county deal with natural resource issues such as water quality, forestry, agricultural best management practices and soil erosion. They also coordinate district programs with the state and federal agencies; as well as oversee the county conservation district's staff, who work directly with residents to educate them on environmental issues.The district is a subdivision of the state government, which manages conservation programs in the county.The Carbon Conservation District board consists of seven volunteer members.Nothstein said that a person must be nominated by an approved nominating organization within the county.Anyone interested in the position or has a recommendation for a nomination, should call the conservation district at (610) 377-4894; the county commissioners' office at (570) 325-3611; or the state Conservation Commission office in Harrisburg at (717) 787-8821.In other matters, the commissioners acted on the following agenda items:• Approved a subgrant award application to be submitted to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for ARRA/Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program federal funding in the amount of $1,170 to purchase a scanner and web cam in order to register sex offenders pursuant to the Adam Walsh (Act 111). The grant is match-free and 100 percent reimbursable.• Accepted the resignations of Gail A. Christman of Lehighton and Thomas J. McCall of Summit Hill from the Industrial Development Authority.• Approved the adjusted allocation for the Medical Assistance Transportation Program for fiscal year 2011-2012. The new amount is $1,648,460.• Approved a lease purchase agreement with Pitney Bowes for a DM100 Desktop Mailing System for county District Court 56-3-02 at a cost of $40.69 for 60 months.
