Prothonotary's report

A total of 308 cases were started June in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of the cases is as follows:Assessment appeal, 1; civil actions, 25; custody complaints, 21; district justice appeals, 7; declaratory judgment, 1; divorce complaints, 14; ejectment complaints, 2; license appeal, 1; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 39; name change petition, 1; miscellaneous, 1; protection from abuse petitions, 30; paternity suit, 1; replevin complaint, 1; judgments, 153; stipulations/ waivers of liens, 9; and writ of execution, 1. The office staff also received and processed 70 applications for U.S. Passports.Behrens' financial report shows $28,913.68 was generated last month as follows: prothonotary's fees, $23,542.51; interest income, $5.12; PFA Surcharge, courts, $50; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff, $25; custody fees, $650; and data processing fees, $4,641.05.The prothonotary also remitted $2,899.76 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $54 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $1,260.71 was deposited in the Prothonotary's Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.Revenue from deedsCarbon County Recorder of Deeds Emmett P. McCall reported his office recorded 186 deeds, 211 mortgages and 394 other writs during the month of June.As a result of those transactions, McCall turned over to the Carbon County General Fund the sum of $27,471.21. A breakdown of that revenue includes: transfer fees, $22,853; data processing fees, $2,032.59; notaries, $40; commission on transfers and writs, $1,560.12; and Affordable Housing administrative fee, $985.50.McCall remitted $395.50 in state writ taxes to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, while Carbon County municipalities and school districts shared realty transfer tax disbursements totaling $77,353.59, the same amount that was forwarded to the state in realty transfer taxes.McCall deposited $2,373 in the Recorder of Deeds Record Improvement Fund and $1,582 in the Carbon County Records Improvement Fund, these being fees assessed by state law on each transaction for records management needs.
