Area man celebrates 92 years

Lester J. Dyson is celebrating his 92nd birthday today. He was born on April 17, 1920 in Pocono Lake.

He is the husband of the late Cora Mae (Arthur) Dyson. He was one of 14 children born to the late Mary V. and S. Freeman Dyson. There were seven boys and seven girls, two sets of twins and a set of triplets.He and Cora Mae had one son, James, who lives in Cresco with his wife Beverly. He has two grandchildren, Peter Dyson and Brittany O'Connor, and two great-grandchildren, Christopher O'Connor and Riley O'Connor.Lester spent the majority of his life in the Poconos, only leaving to work in New York for a time and during his stint in the Army.After the Army, he returned to the Poconos where he eventually met his wife, who was teaching at Tobyhanna High School in Pocono Lake. They were married on Oct. 28, 1951.He worked for the Lehigh-New England railroad until it shut down operations. He was 39 at the time and went back to school and earned his teaching certificate. He was hired by Pocono Mountain School District and taught Social Studies until his retirement.His love for geography led him on many family trips around the U.S. He loves to read and has an extensive library that includes several complete copies of National Geographic magazine. He has been actively involved in the Masons and the Lions Club over the years, and played tambourine in the Shriner's band.He loves to collect stamps and go to auctions and yard sales, looking for bargains.He currently lives at Heritage Hills Senior Community.
