Students give activities presentation to board

A group of Northern Lehigh High School students chosen by their classmates to organize activities continues to raise the bar.

Joined by adviser Renee Evans, Student Council representatives Brandon Horvath and Heather Heiney gave the group's yearly presentation to the school board on Tuesday.Superintendent Michael Michaels introduced the group, of whose vast membership couldn't be on hand due to their participation in athletic events.Michaels indicated that he visited the high school last week to evaluate and grade students on projects, and noted students were doing well districtwide.Horvath and Heiney then mentioned a wide array of activities the group has participated in during the 2011-12 school year.They said the organization continues to host a breakfast once a month on a Friday morning; doubled the amount of food collected, with 964 pounds being given to the Northern Lehigh Food Bank; collected nearly $529 throughout the high school as part of a penny war function that will be donated to the Northern Lehigh Community Center; honored the paraprofessional staff; honored the school librarian and librarian aide with a gift and card for their efforts; and announced upcoming activities, among other achievements.Also on Tuesday, Michaels recognized teachers and administrators from the high school and middle school for their efforts in Student Assistance Programming.Among those signaled out by Michaels from the high school were Robert Vlasaty, principal, Scott Pyne, assistant principal; Scot Engler, director of special education; Melissa DeSocio, Allison Cruschial, Mary Smith, Sheila Lanshe, and Eric Schmidt; and from the middle school, Jill Chamberlain, principal; Sue Bowser; Hali Kuntz, Michell Raber, Alice Lieberman, Sandy Becker, and Paul Leonzi."I'd like to thank them for doing a great job of trying to keep our students on the straight and narrow," Michaels said. "We have very good teachers, and very good students who work hard, try hard."Also on Tuesday, Assistant Superintendent Karen Nicholas informed the board that a preschool director's meeting will be held Thursday at Peter's Elementary School.Nicholas said the purpose of the meeting is for representatives of local preschools to give the district suggestions on what they would like to see. She said board members are welcome to attend.In other business, the board:- Rescinded the appointment of John Rice, which was approved at the March 12 school board meeting, as second shift custodian/maintenance, at a salary of $9 an hour, from 2:30-11 p.m., five days a week, effective March 13, 2012, pending verification of missing documents.- Accepted the resignation of Sheila Steirer from her position as part-time cook's helper, effective March 23, 2012.- Approved the request of employee #3715 to take an unpaid leave of absence beginning May 1, 2012, and continue until the end of the 2011-12 school year. She plans to return to her current position at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.- Approved the request of employee #1620 to take a family medical leave beginning on March 7, 2012. The employee will be using nine accumulated sick days in conjunction with the family medical leave. The employee plans to return to their current teaching position upon release from their attending physician.- Approved JoLeigh Sponsler as Music and Special Education substitute teacher for the 2011-12 school year at the 2011-12 substitute teacher rates as approved on the Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule, pending verification of missing documents.- Approved Jamie Kuhns as a substitute aide for the 2011-12 school year at the 2011-12 substitute rates as approved on the Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule.- Approved Robert Wetzel as a substitute custodian for the 2011-12 school year at he 2011-12 substitute rates as approved on the Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule, pending verification of missing documents.- Authorized administration to enter into an agreement with Pediatric Therapeutic Services to provide contracted speech therapists on an as-needed basis at a cost of $67 per hour for the 2012-13 school year.- Approved the Memorandum of Understanding to the Act 93 contract as recommended by the state auditors.- Allowed administration to apply for an Act 80 day on Jan. 20, 2012, for professional development for the 12th grade educational staff members.- Approved the resolution providing an option for installment payments of real estate taxes for all taxpayers, pursuant to the Taxpayer Relief Act, 53 P.S. 6926.1502.- Approved the attached resolutions and agreement appointing Berkheimer Tax Administration as the commissioned Local Service Tax collector effective Jan. 1, 2012.- Approved Gina Rotondo as a game worker for the 2011-12 school year. Game workers consist of ticket sellers and takers, game announcers, scoreboard operators, timers, field judges, and scorekeepers. The rate of pay is consistent with the rates approved on the 2011-12 Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule.- Announced high school graduation will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, at the Bulldog Athletic Stadium.
