Ten defendants in pending criminal case entered guilty pleas on Tuesday in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted the pleas from the following:Patrick J. Kelly Jr., 25, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct for an incident that occurred on Nov. 21, 2011, near his residence at 19 E. Kline Ave. Kelly was charged with setting an object on fire and placing it on the front porch at 18 E. Kline Ave., the home of his father.Police said the item set on fire was a photo. Kelly said he and his father did not get along. Prosecutors said Kelly has a mental health problem.Kelly also told Matika he put the fire out himself prior to the arrival of police and fire units.Kelly was on probation in Northumberland County at the time of the incident and spent time in prison for violating that probation.Matika placed him on probation for a year, consecutive to the sentence in Northumberland County. Kelly was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 50 hours of community service.Neal F. Hoffman, 49, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence (DUI), a first time offense. He was arrested on July 2, 2011, at Oak and Catawissa sts., in Nesquehoning. Given a test, the result was .19BAC.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 25 hours of community service.Larry C. Shoemaker, 59, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Sept. 4, 2011, along SR895 in Bowmanstown. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.Matika sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, license suspended for a year, get a D&A evaluation, and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.He will serve the jail term on consecutive weekends beginning March 2 at 6 p.m.Garry Edwin Smith, 53, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Nov. 19, 2011, along White St., in Bowmanstown. Given a test, the result was .19BAC.Matika sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, license suspended for a year, get a D&A evaluation, zero tolerance for D&A use, and render 25 hours of community service.He will serve the jail term on consecutive weekends beginning Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m.Russell Bahrey, 35, of Beaver Meadows, pleaded in two pending cases. He pleaded to one count each of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and criminal trespass, as a summary offense. He was arrested on Dec. 2, 2011, by Beaver Meadows police for the assault of Emil Maguschak outside 45 Church St.The also pleaded to one count each of possession of a controlled substance-marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident on Dec. 3, 2011, at the county prison. In that case he was arrested for the Dec. 2 incident and taken to the prison after arraignment. While being searched at the jail marijuana was found on his person.Bahrey is currently on probation in Montgomery County which has a detainer against him.It was noted by defense attorney. George Dydynsky that Bahrey was involved in an automobile accident in which he suffered a traumatic brain injury which will cause him problems for the rest of his life.On the simple assault count Matika sentenced him to time served (81 days) to one year in jail. The same term was imposed on the other counts. He was also ordered to get both a D&A and mental health evaluations, and have no contact with the victim.On the drug counts he was placed on probation for a year on each running concurrently with the assault charge but consecutive to the Montgomery County case.Ronald Warren Rice Jr., 31, of Easton, pleaded to one count of stalking. He was arrested for an incident on Nov. 15, 2009, in Palmerton with Lynn Held the listed victim.Rice was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) probation program for first time offenders but was revoked for having made contact with Held. He spent two days in jail on the charge.Because of the ARD violation Rice lost his job as a corrections officer at the Northampton County prison.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a mental health evaluation, have no contact with Held, and render 50 hours of community service.Coty Dominick Frank, 19, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count each of criminal attempt-theft, simple assault and criminal mischief, as a summary offense.He was arrested on Nov. 11, 2011, for an incident in Nesquehoning. He was observed entering the vehicle of Ann L. Rowlands. She confronted him and he ran off but was later apprehended by police.Frank was on probation as the time and admitted to the probation violation and was immediately resentenced by Matika to time served (104 days) to one year in jail.On the new charges he was placed on probation for a year on each count, consecutive to the probation violation. On the summary he was fined $25 and costs.Matika also ordered Frank to make restitution to Rowlands for $401.99, and render 25 hours of community service.Frank was paroled and will enter the Teen Challenge rehabilitation program.Anthony Timothy Bombico, 43, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count each of DUI of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Nov. 20, 2009, at state routes 209 and 443 in Lehighton.Matika deferred sentencing.Justin Hill, 20, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Oct. 10, 2011, along W. Bertsch St., Lansford.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he get a D&A evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, and render 25 hours of community service.It was noted Hill has a DUI charge pending.Alan Daniel Kovacs, 43, of Hazleton, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Oct. 1, 2011, along Holiday Drive in Kidder Township after being involved in an accident. Given a test, the result was .21BAC.Matika sentenced him to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs, which average close to $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
