Palmerton district schedules kindergarten registration

Published January 13. 2012 05:01PM

Palmerton Area School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year on Monday, March 5, through Friday, March 9, 2012.

All Kindergarten registrations will take place in the district offices located on the Third Floor of Parkside Education Center, 680 Fourth Street, Palmerton. You must schedule an appointment to register your child for Kindergarten by calling Kimberly Ottinger at 610-826-7101, ext. 5023.

Scheduling the appointment times avoids delays during the registration process. Appointment times will be from 8:30-11 a.m., and 12:30-2:45 p.m., Monday, March 5, through Wednesday, March 7. Thursday, March 8, and Friday, March 9, will be reserved for rescheduling appointments due to weather.

In the event of inclement weather, the following procedure will be used: If there is a two-hour school delay, appointments will begin at 10 a.m. Appointments between 8:30-10 a.m. will be rescheduled. Also, if school is closed due to snow, appointments will be rescheduled.

Children who will be five (5) on or before Sept. 1, 2012, are eligible for kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year, according to school district policy. Children without kindergarten experience who will be six (6) years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2012, are eligible to register for either kindergarten or first grade, according to this same policy. However, if you wish to have your child enter first grade, you must put this intention in writing at the time of registration.

A state-issued birth certificate, or other acceptable proof of age and name is required for each child to be registered. If these papers are not available at the time of registration, the child should be registered, and the documents must be provided before the child will be admitted to school in August. Parent photo ID, along with another proof of residency, is required at the time of registration.

State law requires that all children entering school for the first time must have written proof of the following immunizations: four doses of tetanus (one does must have been administered on or after the fourth birthday); four doses of diphtheria (one dose must have been administered on or after the fourth birthday); three doses of poliomyelitis/infantile paralysis; two doses of measles; two doses of mumps; one dose of rubella (German measles); three doses of hepatitis B; two doses of varicella (chickenpox); vaccine or history of disease. Parents/guardians are advised to bring the necessary immunization records to the registration clinic, along with your child. Proof of these immunizations must be provided before the child will be admitted to school.

Since all children are now required to have a Social Security number, it is optional to provide the school with this number.

Please bring your child with you to registration. While you are completing the necessary registration paperwork with Mrs. Ottinger, your child will have a vision screening with our school nurse, and take a kindergarten readiness assessment with a kindergarten teacher or other staff member.
