A Monroe County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a two-vehicle crash that occurred about 3:56 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the intersection of Burger Hollow and Gernerd roads, in Polk Township.

State police at Lehighton said Patrick Pio, 40, of Effort, was driving a 2002 Ford Focus northbound on Gernerd at a high rate of speed and failed to stop for a posted stop sign at the intersection.

Pio's vehicle struck a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country van driven by Joseph Dimarco, 43, of Kunkletown, broadside with the front of his vehicle.

Pio and three passengers with Dimarco, were all taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, for treatment of injuries. Another passenger with Dimarco, Lillian Dimarco, 42, was not injured.

Troopers said it was determined that Pio was under the influence of alcohol and will be charged with DUI and related offenses.

Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the West End and Wind Gap EMS units and the Polk Township Fire Company.
