The monthly meeting of Nesquehoning Borough Council went off later this month due to the untimely death of one of its council members, Frank DiMiceli. Also absent was councilman David Hawk. Council is now accepting names to replace DiMiceli's seat.

During the visitors portion of the meeting, Avril "Abby" Guardiani, told council that she and her neighbors were in attendance because of the deplorable condition of the vacant house behind them. Guardiani and her husband live on East Center Street, but the house is on East Railroad Street. She said there have been tarps on the tattered roof for a long time, and when the occupants moved out the house was left wide open. Doors and windows were without screens.Then it was sold to Wells Fargo Bank. Code Enforcement Officer Linda Narciso and Police Chief Sean Smith were asked to do something about it and immediately a condemnation sign was placed on the home. But the prior occupants went into the home, which was against the law, and removed everything, including the kitchen sink. Now it has been sold to Wholesale Mortgage of Texas which purchased 200 homes and are in violation of the upkeep. Grass needs to be mowed and there are birds living inside the home. Solicitor Robert Yurchak will contact the mortgage company and give them a two week notice to demolish the place.Nesquehoning resident Tom Merman said, "I want to see action on these ordinances."He has spoken out various times about enforcing the borough ordinances.Other matters that occurred during the meeting are as follows: Nesquehoning Boy Scout Jacob Snyder was present since he is doing badge work.Code Enforcement Officer Linda Narciso also gave a lengthy report on the many violations in the borough.Superintendent Lou Paul said the flags hanging on the poles were damaged by the hail storm and they will see how many can be repaired. They may have to be placed on every other flagpole. He said they are using a roller which he would be interested in purchasing for the borough streets. The used roller costs $9,500 and the current owner will pick it up and do any necessary maintenance to it. Paul will give three quotes to the borough and contract in writing after which the roller can be purchased by the council's permission.Borough council accepted the resignation of Sue Heckman from the Civil Service Commission.The Shade Tree Ordinance has been adopted.On July 17 the Anthracite Triathlon will come through Nesquehoning.A thank you will be sent to the Weatherly Police Department for the taser training to all of the Nesquehoning Police Officers.There was a discussion on Compost Recycling of grass and leaves. A further study will be made and brought back at the next meeting.The next Crime Watch meeting is set for July 6 at 7 p.m. Any resident who has an interest is invited to attend at the borough hall.There is a borough ordinance for fireworks and anyone caught setting off illegal fireworks in the borough will be arrested.The former police station to the rear of the borough building has been remodeled and is now being used by borough secretary/treasurer RoniSue Ahner and also for council executive meetings.Joseph Starosta was hired as a part-time garbage picker. Nesquehoning resident Jacob Arner received a tax reimbursement of $153.79.Lights will be placed at the basketball court in the New Columbus playground.A $500 donation will be sent to the Friends of Animals who always come to Nesquehoning when called to rescue cats. Donations will also be sent to the Dimmick Memorial Library and the Panther Valley Library.
