Franklin Township supervisors awarded bids for road materials on Tuesday, which assures that several township roads will be resurfaced this year. Awarded the bids to provide 27,907 square yards of materials were Asphalt Maintenance Solutions of Center Valley, who will be paid $36,149.10 for road materials. Other bidders were Dosch-King Co. Inc. and Martin Paving.

The board plans to do seal coatings on all of Robrucel Drive and Forest Street and lower Grange Road and Sawmill Road; and to overlay half of Hemlock Road, part of Krakow Drive, plus restore a section of Reber Street that was torn up because of sewer activity; and overlay a part of Oak Drive.Lehigh Asphalt was also awarded the bid to provide materials for the township road crew to use to repair and repave township roads at a cost of $50,730. Lehigh Asphalt was the sole bidder.The board also adopted a resolution that establishes applicants will pay into an escrow account fees for professional consultants and approved having Packer Township join the Uniform Construction Code Joint Board of Appeals.Chairman Rod Green said that Packer Township is the 10th community to join into the Joint Board of Appeals, but that the board should consider adopting a policy that any additional communities that want to join should pay legal fees and advertising costs.Green said that Franklin Township absorbed the costs and that the applicants should be paying. Green said the fees are at least $200 to the township.The board approved the Lehighton Churchman's League to use the Bunker Hill Softball Field.The board also approved purchasing a 2011 GMC Sierra 3500 four-by-four dump truck through the Costars Program and hired Matthew Schaeffer and Steven Bond as summer employees as needed.The board approved the list of events for the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Police. The fire police will park cars at the Big Creek Grange Spring Flea Market on May 21 and will assist with traffic control at the Big Bear Triathlon at Beltzville State Park on June 5. They will also assist at the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company's car and bike show on June 4.Gaumer said that if anyone seeks the services of the fire police they need to make requests in time for the supervisors to approve the requests. She also noted that residents must apply for a driveway permit if they plan to construct a driveway or to have the existing driveway paved. There is no fee for the permit.Garbage collection pick up will also change for the Memorial Day holiday. All Monday pickups will be changed to Tuesday, May 31.
