With the current school year winding down the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 School Board approved plans for the 2011 Environmental Education Summer Camp to be held at the North Campus in Butler Township from June 13 through 16 and at the South Campus in Norwegian Township from June 20 through 23, in action taken at its monthly meeting held Monday evening at the Maple Avenue Campus in Norwegian Township.

Tracey Picht and Joseph Delluso were named to perform coordinating duties at a rate of $25 per hour with the costs to be paid through grants received from Luzerne County Community College Tech Prep. Adrian Portland, Pottsville, was hired as Camp Director at $875Sixteen instructors were hired for 6.5 hours at $25 per hour. They were Bryan Lehocky, Fred Cicero, Donald Stevenson, Frank Rupp, David Hess, Scott Reichert, Phillip Cimino, Timothy McGinley, Amy Marnell, Jason Wright, Jeanette Tobin, Jeffrey Long, Edward Pollack, Elizabeth Wolff, Angela Salvadore and Hugh Dougherty. Guest speaker will be Gary McCready on "Energy Career."Hired as seasonal summer maintenance staff to complete outdoor and indoor tasks were: Albert Wank, $19 per hour; Charles Taronis, $11; and Thomas Monaghan, Michael Fetterolf, Jeffrey Marteslo, Christian Gardner, Ryan Merwine, Justin Lingenfelter, Jeremy Hoke and David Bolish, each $8.25 per hour.Studentswin honorsCasey Green, senior at Tri Valley School District, and Mason Markel, senior at Williams Valley School District, were awarded $500 scholarships by the Schuylkill IU Teaches' Education Association.Students from the North Campus who were winners in the 2011 Skills USA state competition held at Hersey were as follows:Dillon Doyle, Tri-Valley School District, took second place, wnning a silver medal and an $18,000 scholarship from Lincoln Tech in the small engine division; Sean Bachert, Minersville Area School District, second price, silver medal and an $8,000 scholarship to Lincoln Tech in the industrial motor control division; Mariana Yagielniski, North Schuylkill, third place, bronze medal and a $1,000 scholarship to Penn Tech in the culinary arts division; Bryon McMahon, North Schuylkill, fifth place in the auto service division and is enrolled in auto technology; Kole Milller, Williams Valley, fifth place in power equipment division; Derek Dombrowski, Mahanoy City, sixth place in food division; Jenna Schlosser, Tamaqua, seventh place in medical math, is enrolled in the nursing program; and Katie Noon, Minersville, seventh place in culinar division.The board approved payments to several school districts for instructional services and supplies utilized during the second quarter of the 2010-11 after school program. All costs were covered by the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) cohort grants.They were: North Schuylkill, $10,573.62; Minersville Area, $5,665.08; Williams Valley, $2,590.63; Saint Clair Area, $15,877.22; Williams Valley High School, $8,756.75; Shenandoah Valley High High School and Middle School, each $8,435; Schuylkill Haven Area, $24,971.26; Pine Grove Area High School, $17,987.44; and Pine Grove Area Middle School, $25,796.52.Retiring - Henry Moyer, emotional support teacher; Mary E. Melochick, secretary at Maple Avenue Campus; and Melinda Murphy, teacher aide at Pine Grove Elementary.An agreement was approved with Luzerne County Community College to submit a consortium grant application to Pennsylvania Department of Education for the administration of Adult Basic Education Classes and Family Literacy Services from July 1, through June 30, 2014.The board was informed Schuylkill County superintendents, high school principals, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Penn State Schuylkill Campus and Lebanon Valley College will recognize students for academic excellence at the 28th annual Schuylkill County Academic Achievement awards program to be held at the Pottsville Club Tuesday, May 17, with a breakfast buffet beginning at 8 a.m. and program a 9 a.m. Each public and nonpublic high school is invited to select six schollars who will be recognized for academic excellence, achievement and accomplishment.Lisa Shustack, Barnesville, was hired as a practical nursing instructor at an annual salary of $51,650.The board increased the nurse aide uniform allowance from $100 to $150. Students are responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and the board fixed the nurses aide tuition of $1,350 to include text book but not state competency exam. The fee for the competency exam must be separate from the tuition Dr. Diane M. Niederriter, executive director, announced.The board accepted the Act 183 technology grant in amount of $348,571 to be used for equipment and professional development.The IU Board is comprised of a school director from the 11 public school districts in Schuylkill County and Williams Valley from Dauphin County.
