Spring has sprung, meaning that it is time for flowers to bloom, longer days, warmer weather and snow?

As residents across the TIMES NEWS coverage area woke up this morning, they were greeted by the first sign of spring ... or rather the last hoorah of winter.A storm loaded with a wintry mix blew through the region overnight, dropping nearly four inches of snow before changing over to a sleet and rain mix around 6 a.m.According to the National Weather Service, the storm was scheduled to move into the area during the overnight hours and stick around through this afternoon. Temperatures in the low 50s are expected later in the day.But Monday's early morning commute, when temperatures hovered right around the freezing mark, was treacherous for many motorists.Numerous accidents were reported throughout Carbon County, including one in Mahoning Township and one near Panther Valley High School in Summit Hill; as well as a rollover accident along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.The Mansion House Hill between Jim Thorpe and Mahoning Township was also closed for four hours due to an accident, causing major traffic backups as motorists tried to get to work.Mahoning Township police shut down the hill at 4:02 a.m., detouring traffic around the hill, and reopened it at 8:14 a.m.Township Police Chief Kenneth Barnes said the hill was closed as a result of an accident involving two tractor trailers and a car.He said no other information was available at this time.According to the PPL Electric outage center website, 24 residents in Schuylkill County, 124 in Monroe, and 39 in Carbon experienced power outages.Most schools in Carbon also operated on a two-hour delay, while only one delay, McAdoo Catholic, in Schuylkill County was reported. Pleasant Valley School District in Monroe County closed.Ronald J. Young, district press officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said that crews did not experience any major problems.As the day goes on, the National Weather Service reports that rain will be likely, with thunderstorms possible after 5 p.m. Clouds will break tonight and bring mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-30s.Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with highs near 50.Another chance of snow is possible Tuesday night into Wednesday.According to the National Weather Service, a chance of rain and snow is possible before 5 a.m. Wednesday before changing over to all snow before 11 a.m. A slight warm-up to near 37 will change the snow back to a mix throughout the afternoon. The storm is again expected to change over to snow overnight. No significant accumulation is expected.
